What is Backlog?

A backlog is a prioritized list of tasks, features, or ideas that haven't been started yet. It serves as a holding area for work you intend to do eventually, keeping it separate from what you're actively working on today.

Understanding Backlog

Every productivity system needs a place to dump tasks that aren't urgent right now but shouldn't be forgotten. That's the backlog. In software development, it usually refers to a list of user stories or bug fixes waiting to be pulled into a sprint. In personal planning, it's simpler — it's the 'not today, but soon' pile.

The problem most people run into is backlog bloat. Tasks get added and never reviewed, so the backlog grows into a guilt-inducing scroll of hundreds of items. A healthy backlog needs regular grooming: scanning through it, deleting things you'll never actually do, and pulling items forward when the time is right.

A well-managed backlog takes pressure off your daily plan. Instead of cramming 20 tasks into today's list and feeling overwhelmed, you keep today focused and realistic, knowing that everything else is safely parked in the backlog for when you're ready.

How skift Uses Backlog

skift gives you a dedicated backlog column on your Kanban board. Tasks you're not ready to tackle today live there visually, separated from your daily focus. When you're planning tomorrow, just drag items from the backlog into your day.
